Play-full-ness is the key word that depicts Asli Kutluay’s work. Indeed the work encapsulates so much playfulness and joy with elegance. Coco Chanel is an archetype underlying many of the characters Kutluay portrays. She is volatile and somewhat more than what her environment can hold; quite like an ocean mind not settling for the given set of circumstance. This is where the cigarette often seen in Kutluay’s characters’ hands comes into the action. The cigarette reflects the female ahead of her times yet still abundantly expressive and affective with just the little fire she has to burn. She is vulnerable in an atmosphere of strict limitations on women. Politics, political activism and striking counter-attack in not accepting the role defined for her gender in society is felt in the characters’ defiant stance against the possibility of violence around them while not for a moment giving up the cultivated beauty, fragility and charm the female has in freedom. Kutluay represents the female warrior singing lovely poetry…  - Tchera Niyego
